How OneMagnify Helped a Brain Health Supplement Leader Ditch Development Debt and Protect Every Subscriber

THE CHALLENGE

BrainMD had outgrown its platform. Their legacy Adobe Commerce site carried years of custom development debt. Subscription management, marketing updates, and content changes all required developer involvement. The team was spending time and budget on maintenance instead of growth.

Subscriptions are the core of BrainMD’s business. Most products deliver their full benefit after multiple months of consistent use, which means recurring revenue and customer outcomes are inseparable. BrainMD needed a platform that could support a non-standard subscription model, free the marketing team to move at the speed of their business, and protect every active subscriber through migration without disruption to  recurring revenue.

THE BRAND

Founded in 2005 by world-renowned psychiatrist Dr. Daniel G. Amen, BrainMD is a brain-first health and wellness company headquartered in Irvine, CA. Built on more than 30 years of clinical practice and the world’s largest database of brain SPECT imaging, now exceeding 260,000 scans, BrainMD develops doctor- formulated supplements designed to optimize brain health. Their mission: Better Brain, Better Life. With over 320 SKUs spanning focus, mood, sleep, memory, and gut health, BrainMD serves direct-to-consumer shoppers and a nationwide network of clinics. They have sold more than 5 million supplements and completed over 6 million Brain Health Assessments.

THE SOLUTION

OneMagnify replatformed BrainMD to Shopify Plus, delivering a scalable commerce foundation that empowers the internal team, supports complex subscription purchasing, and connects clinical care to the online store for the first time. Every decision was made to reduce friction for the customer, the marketing team, and the business.

A PRODUCT DETAIL PAGE THAT EARNS THE SUBSCRIPTION

BrainMD attracts two new types of shoppers: those who arrive knowing exactly which product they saw on TikTok, and those who are new to brain health and need guidance before they can commit. OneMagnify designed the experience to convert both. Recognized products are easy to find and fast to purchase. For shoppers who need a starting point, a Brain Type Quiz built on Involve.me captures results and writes them to the customer’s Shopify account via webhook, routing them to a personalized product page matched to their brain type. This removed the uncertainty that could cause prospective customers to leave without buying.

The product detail page was rebuilt as a modular experience designed to convert browsers into subscribers. Variant-specific content, including images, supplement facts, and ingredient breakdowns, updates instantly when a customer changes their selection, keeping the experience accurate without a page reload. A results timeline showing expected outcomes at weeks one, three, and six addresses the most common reason supplement customers do not commit to a subscription: not knowing what to expect. The subscription option is the default, the savings are foregrounded, and the layout is optimized for the mobile, older audience that makes up the majority of BrainMD’s customer base, with high-contrast text and large touch targets throughout.

SUBSCRIPTION LOGIC THAT MATCHES THE BUSINESS MODEL

BrainMD’s subscription model is built around clinical efficacy. Customers who commit to a three-month plan receive three units, one for each month, and their savings compound the more they subscribe across products. OneMagnify built a custom subscription module using Shopify metaobjects to link each subscription plan to a locked purchase quantity and discount tier. When a customer selects a delivery cadence, quantity and price update programmatically in real time. The same logic runs inside the Rebuy Smart Cart, so changes made during checkout recalculate instantly across all subscription line items. The experience is seamless for the customer and fully consistent with BrainMD’s clinical philosophy.

Free trials are a key acquisition tool for the brand. Each trial must automatically convert to a full-size subscription on a separate product SKU, with trial periods varying by product and each trial redeemable only once per customer. OneMagnify built a custom enforcement layer using product-level metafields, Ordergroove Offer Tagging, and Shopify Flow automations to manage every rule. Redemption limits are applied at the account level. The upcoming subscription commitment is surfaced clearly before checkout. Every trial is engineered to start a long-term customer relationship, not a one-time transaction.

MANAGING SUBSCRIPTION MIGRATION LOSS

Subscription migrations carry real financial risk. Industry data indicates that poorly executed migrations can lead to subscriber losses of up to 10% of the base, and BrainMD had experienced subscriber attrition during a prior migration. The goal this time around was to ensure losses at launch were minimal.

To achieve this outcome, the OneMagnify team identified that a significant portion of subscriber payment records in the legacy system contained incomplete data, which would have caused those records to fail in the new platform. The team extracted and reconciled the missing data from the legacy Adobe database, mapped it to existing payment token records, and reprocessed the migration—successfully recovering more than 90% of subscriber payment records before go-live.

For the remaining subscribers whose payment methods could not be migrated, OneMagnify built a custom order synchronization bridge within the legacy system. These subscriptions continue to renew and process through the legacy Ordergroove instance, with fulfilled orders automatically pushed into Shopify to ensure a single, unified order history. This approach provided the customer service team with a clear and structured runway to convert remaining subscribers before the legacy system reaches end-of-life.

As a result, subscribers retained their relationship with BrainMD through launch and beyond, experiencing minimal disruption to orders and little to no customer awareness of the migration.

A SEAMLESS EXPERIENCE FOR EVERY CUSTOMER

BrainMD’s customer service team can now access a complete view of every customer, including purchase history, subscription status, loyalty points, and returns, from a single interface. OneMagnify integrated Gorgias as the centralized support platform and synchronized it with Shopify, Ordergroove, ReturnGO, and Yotpo so agents have everything they need without switching systems. A login-as-customer capability was implemented directly in the storefront, allowing agents to step into a customer’s session and handle subscription changes, product questions, and account management on their behalf. For a brand whose customers tend to prefer personal support and whose subscription model has real complexity, this capability directly protects retention.

CLINICS AND COMMERCE, CONNECTED

BrainMD’s Amen Clinics recommend personalized supplement protocols to patients across the country, but until now, that recommendation lived only in the clinic. OneMagnify built the connection between clinical care and online commerce. A custom patient enrollment form, visible only to clinic-authenticated users, queries the Shopify customer database in real time to find or create patient accounts and assign recommended products as structured metafield data. Patients log into a personalized “My Doctor Protocol” page where their provider’s recommendations are presented in a shoppable grid, and patient discounts apply automatically via Shopify Flow. What was once a disconnected experience is now a seamless extension of the care patients receive in person, and a new online revenue channel for BrainMD.

MARKETING INDEPENDENCE, BUILT IN

BrainMD’s marketing team can now run campaigns, rotate merchandising, and update content entirely on their own. OneMagnify evaluated multiple Shopify Plus themes against BrainMD’s content requirements and catalog complexity, then developed additional page-builder components to expand native authoring capabilities beyond what the theme provided out of the box. Custom product tags, including “TikTok Viral,” “Dr. Amen Favorite,” “Staff Pick,” and “Trending” were implemented as Shopify metaobjects, giving the team full control over label text, color, and placement directly from the product admin. What once required a developer ticket now takes minutes. The result is a storefront that moves as fast as the business does.

Results

The BrainMD replatform delivered on every measure that mattered. Minimal subscribers were impacted through migration, a result that stands against a 10% industry baseline and against BrainMD’s own prior experience. More than 90 percent of subscriber payment records were recovered and successfully migrated. The marketing team gained full operational independence to act on opportunities without waiting for development resources. A clinic-to-patient commerce experience was built where none existed before. And a subscription engine purpose-built for BrainMD’s model now enforces their business rules automatically, at scale, in real time.
